Fluorination

Fluorination is a well known pre-treatment method to modify polymer surfaces using fluorine, allowing a relatively high depth of penetration into the material leading to a more permanent and stable surface layer. Only the surface of the material is modified, leaving the rest of the material properties unchanged.
Fluorination increases the wettability of plastics. Wettability is a necessary
pre-condition to get surface adhesion of paint lacquers and adhesives. The process changes the surface tension of the material to which it is applied and thus increases the adhesion of coatings such as paint, lacquers and adhesives.
Fluorination is also used to decrease the permeability of gases and liquids through plastics, which offers environmental and economical advantages. Fluorination can reduce the emissions of harmful odours and gases, while offering a cost efficient, lightweight and environmentally friendly solution.
